Patient Partner Research
How can patients help improve research?
Over the last decade, patients, living kidney donors and caregivers have become much more involved in their care as well as research focused on improving kidney care and outcomes.
Patient-centered approaches have already contributed to significant advances in kidney care through initiatives such as https://cansolveckd.ca/ which is a national network of patients and researchers.
Patients are true experts with respect to their own experiences of illness. This expertise is powerful and can create research with much more meaningful impact. The patient-as-partner approach works to involve the patient a true member of the health care team and a full partner in his or her care.
Patient partners involvement can include the identification of the research topic, development and execution of the research plan, authorship on publications, white papers and manuscripts, and helping to translate research learnings to other patients, healthcare organizations, and government agencies.
The Kidney Alliance works to connect patients and researchers with mutual interests to enrich and enhance research outcomes and impact.
